White Bear Lake is an interesting place to scoop, because the neighbourhoods really do change depending on which side of town you're on.

Around downtown you'll find older homes, many built before 1945, on a traditional street grid. Move farther out and you get the mid-century neighbourhoods, mostly single-family homes on small and medium lots. Then there are the properties along White Bear Lake, Goose Lake and Birch Lake, where the yards and layouts change all over again. That's not our marketing department talking, it's roughly how the city describes its own neighbourhoods.

For us that means there's no reason to treat every White Bear Lake yard as the same job. We clean the area your dog actually uses, and price larger areas accordingly.

White Bear has always been a little different

There's a reason downtown doesn't feel like a shopping centre that appeared twenty years ago.

In the 1800s White Bear Lake was a resort town. Once the railroad connected it to St. Paul in 1868, people came out to stay at the hotels and resorts along the lake, and restaurants, shops and entertainment grew up downtown.

Our own family remembers some of that. Our grandpa used to come up here when he was young, back when the area felt a lot more like lake cabins and a getaway from the city than the suburb it is now. You can still feel pieces of that version of White Bear around downtown and the lake.

And White Bear really likes its dogs

If you own one here, you know. There's a dog beach right on White Bear Lake where people bring their dogs down to the water. Locals have been advocating for that piece of lakefront for years, and in city meetings they've described it as one of the things that makes living near downtown special.

Then there's Cup and Cone downtown, a White Bear institution serving ice cream since 1973. Bring your dog along and they'll make them a pup cup.

Of course, dogs doing dog things around White Bear means they do plenty of dog things back at home too. That's our part.
